A dune buggy is a side-by-side off-road vehicle: a steel roll cage, bucket seats with harness belts, a steering wheel and pedals. You are not a passenger in someone else's 4x4 the way you are on a desert safari — you drive it yourself, on a guided route through the Al Badayer Red Dunes beside Big Red.
People confuse buggies with quad bikes, and they should not. A quad is ridden astride, balanced with your body. A buggy is sat in, belted, steered. That makes a buggy the easier machine to learn and the faster one to respect: a Polaris RZR 1000cc will climb a dune face a rental quad walks around, and the Can-Am Maverick R X RS at 240hp will do it carrying four people.
Our dune buggy rental Dubai sessions run from our own camp at Al Badayer in Sharjah, reached from Dubai on the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44) in about forty minutes. Every session includes the machine, the safety gear, a briefing, a practice loop and a guide who rides the route with you. Book a buggy on its own, or take the Desert Safari + Dune Buggy Combo and get the 4x4 dune bashing, the camp dinner and the shows in the same evening.
Every package below is self-drive with a guide escort, safety gear and a practice run. What changes is the machine, the seat count and the time of day.
First run of the day on firm, wind-smoothed sand before the desert warms up. The quietest hour at Al Badayer and the easiest conditions to learn in.
The classic slot. Deep afternoon colour across the Red Dunes, ending as the sun drops behind the ridge at Big Red.
Lit dunes, cool air and a completely different read of the terrain. Night riding is slower, closer to the guide, and the one guests talk about most.
Pick the seat count, the time of day and the length of the route. Useful for mixed groups where one family wants four seats and a couple wants two.
A serious machine: 240 horsepower, Smart-Shox suspension and the travel to take a dune face at a speed the entry-level fleet cannot.

1, 2 and 4 seat
Our workhorse and the machine most first-time drivers use. Enough power to climb a proper dune face, forgiving enough that you are not fighting it on the way down. Available as a single, a two-seat side-by-side or a four-seat family buggy.
2 and 4 seat
240hp with Smart-Shox adaptive suspension. It carries speed across broken sand that would unsettle a smaller buggy, and it climbs steeper faces with less run-up. We hand these to drivers who have ridden before or who take the practice session seriously.
4 seat
The Stage 4 flagship: long-travel suspension, electronic power steering and the widest track in the fleet. Built for drivers chasing the big Al Badayer bowls rather than a gentle loop.
Step by step
Drive yourself in or take a transfer. Check in at the camp beside Big Red, meet your guide and sign the rider declaration.
Helmet, goggles and gloves are issued and fitted. Your guide walks you round the buggy: throttle, brake, harness, kill switch and what to do if you bog down.
Before the route, you drive a short loop on flat ground until turning, braking and throttle control feel normal. Nobody leaves for the dunes until this looks right.
You follow a guide in convoy through the Al Badayer Red Dunes, with spacing rules and a set route chosen for the group's ability and the day's sand condition.
The convoy stops high on a ridge. Engines off, helmets off, and the whole Big Red dune field opens up in front of you.
Return to the camp, hand back the gear and cool down with water. Add a camel ride, sandboarding or the evening BBQ if you booked the safari package.

Drivers must be 16 or older. That is our operating policy at Al Badayer and it is not negotiable, because a buggy on soft sand asks for judgement as much as strength.

Before you arrive
Light and breathable, but covering your arms and legs. Sand thrown up by the machine in front stings bare skin, and exhaust pipes are hot at a standstill.
Trainers or boots. No sandals, no flip-flops, no open backs. Your feet work the pegs and the brake, and sand gets everywhere in open shoes.
Goggles cover you while riding; you will want sunglasses and a hat for the ridge stop and around the camp.
Fine desert sand works into every seam. Nothing white, nothing you were planning to wear to dinner afterwards.
Reapplying with sandy hands does not work. Put it on at the hotel.
Once the sun drops at Al Badayer the temperature falls quickly, especially on a night ride.
Riding rules
Helmet, goggles and gloves stay on from the moment you mount until you are back at camp, including the photo stop if the engine is running.
Sand changes daily with wind and traffic. A face that held yesterday can be collapsed today. Your guide rides it every day; take the line you are shown.
Stay the distance your guide sets from the machine in front. Most rental incidents in the desert are rear-end contacts on a descent, not spectacular crashes.
These are guided adventure rentals on a shared route. Deliberate stunt riding ends the session and makes the rider liable for damage.
Alcohol or drugs on the day mean no machine, no refund, and no discussion.
If you feel out of your depth, say so at the practice loop rather than halfway up a dune. We will move you to an easier machine or an easier route.
Where you ride
Every buggy session runs from our Al Badayer Desert Camp at XP57+V87, Al Badayer, Sharjah, UAE, beside the dune the whole country calls Big Red, in Sharjah. From Dubai it is roughly forty minutes along the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44), and about 57km from Dubai International Airport.
We operate here and nowhere else — not Lahbab, not Al Qudra, not Margham. One desert, known face by face, which is exactly why our guides can read which slopes are holding on any given morning. Our booking office is at Barsha Heights, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, but that is for paperwork: all riding happens at the camp.

At Al Badayer our self-drive buggy rentals run from AED 249 for a 30-minute Polaris RZR 1000cc session up to AED 2,998 for two hours in the RZR PRO R Ultimate. One hour in a Polaris RZR is AED 500 per buggy; the Can-Am Maverick R X RS is AED 999 for two seats and AED 1,300 for four. The price is for the machine, not per head, so a couple sharing a two-seater splits it.
Drivers must be at least 16. Younger guests ride as passengers with an adult driving, and we take passengers from about three years old where the harness fits properly. Tell us everyone's age when you book so we allocate the right machine.
No driving licence is needed for a self-drive buggy on our desert route, but bring valid photo identification. We check ID to confirm the driver's age before handing over a machine.
Yes, and most of our drivers are beginners. Every session opens with a briefing and a practice loop on flat sand before the route starts, and a guide rides with the group the whole way. Start on the Polaris RZR 1000cc rather than the Can-Am if you have never driven one.
Our Polaris RZR 1000cc machines sit comfortably around 55 to 70 km/h on open sand, and the Can-Am Maverick R X RS and RZR PRO R will go well beyond that. On a guided desert route you rarely use it; dune driving is about line choice and momentum, not top speed.
Standalone buggy rentals are priced for arrival at our Al Badayer desert camp. Private hotel transfers from Dubai are AED 300 for up to five people. The Desert Safari + Dune Buggy Combo at AED 399 per person already includes shared hotel pickup and drop-off.
No. The impact loading through soft sand is not appropriate during pregnancy, and the same applies to the 4x4 dune-bashing section of a safari. We will happily move you to the desert camp, the camel ride and the dinner instead.
Light long sleeves and long trousers, closed-toe shoes with a solid sole, sunglasses and a hat. Skip anything loose that can catch, and leave good clothes behind because fine sand gets into everything. We supply the helmet, goggles and gloves.
Sessions run 30 minutes, one hour, 90 minutes or two hours of seat time. One hour is the most booked. If your buggy is part of a full desert safari, the drive is 30 minutes inside a six-hour evening.
October to April is comfortable all day. From May to September book the early-bird or night slot, when the sand is cooler and the machines run better.
