What Is Dune Bashing in Dubai?

Dune bashing, defined

Dune bashing is a guided 4x4 off-road ride across sand dunes, driven by an experienced desert driver. Instead of following a flat road, the vehicle moves through natural dune terrain, climbing slopes, crossing ridges and descending soft dune faces while the driver continually adjusts the line and momentum to suit the sand.

At Al Badayer, the experience takes place among the area's distinctive red dunes near Big Red. Unlike a dune buggy or quad bike tour, guests do not normally drive the 4x4 themselves — you remain a passenger while the desert guide controls the vehicle.

How the drive works

Before the high dunes, the vehicle is prepared for soft sand and the driver checks that everyone is seated and belted. From there the drive is about reading the terrain: choosing a line up a dune face, arriving at a ridge at the right speed so the vehicle settles rather than launches, and controlling the descent down a soft slope.

Sand is not a fixed surface. It changes with wind, temperature and how much traffic the area has seen that day, which is why a driver who works the same dune field every day matters more than raw engine power.

What it feels like

Most guests describe it as a rollercoaster the driver steers: a climb, a moment at the top, then a controlled descent, repeated across the dune field with photo stops in between. It is exciting rather than frightening for the majority of people, and the driver tells you what is coming.

If you are prone to motion sickness, tell the booking team and the driver. Avoid a heavy meal in the two to three hours before the activity, and keep your eyes on the horizon rather than a phone screen.

Typical dune-bashing sessions run around 20–30 minutes on an evening safari, and approximately 40 minutes on our private morning tour.

Dune bashing is run in purpose-suited 4WD safari vehicles with seat belts for every passenger. Our wider adventure fleet also includes Polaris RZR 1000cc and Can-Am Maverick dune buggies, and 620cc quad bikes alongside the Yamaha Raptor 700cc for riders who want more performance.

Where it happens

Our dune bashing takes place at Al Badayer Desert — Big Red, in the Emirate of Sharjah, reached from Dubai on the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44). Hotel pickup from Dubai is included on several packages, so you do not need your own vehicle.
