Quad Biking at Al Badayer, Explained by the People Who Run It

A quad bike — an ATV, an all-terrain vehicle, a four-wheeler, whichever word you grew up with — is ridden astride, like a motorbike with four wheels. You steer with the bars and with your weight, and on soft sand your body position matters as much as the throttle. That is why it feels so different from being driven through the dunes on a desert safari.

Our quad bike Dubai rentals run at the Al Badayer Red Dunes in Sharjah, next to Big Red, about forty minutes from Dubai on the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44) and roughly 57km from Dubai International Airport. Riding happens in designated areas with a guide present, not loose in the open dune field — which is the difference between a controlled adventure and a recovery call.

The standard machine is a 620cc automatic: no clutch, no gears, nothing to think about except where you are going. There is a twin-seat version so a couple can ride together or an adult can carry a child, and for experienced riders there is the Yamaha Raptor 700cc, a genuine sport quad. Prefer a steering wheel and a roll cage? That is a dune buggy.

The machine almost everyone starts on. Fully automatic, so there is no clutch and no gear changing: twist the throttle, look where you want to go and the quad follows. Stable enough for a first-timer, quick enough to be fun on the open sand.

The same easy automatic platform with a longer seat and a grab rail, so a couple can ride together or an adult can carry a younger passenger. One price covers both riders.

Single rider

Yamaha Raptor 700cc

A sport quad, not a rental runabout: 686cc single cylinder, manual clutch, long-travel suspension. It will climb faces the 620cc machines cannot and it punishes sloppy riding. We hand these to guests who tell us honestly that they have ridden before.

Your Quad Bike Session, Step by Step

Arrive at Al Badayer

Self-drive in or use a shared transfer from Dubai. Check in at our desert camp on the Dubai-Hatta Road and meet your guide.

Gear up

Helmet, goggles and gloves are fitted before anything else. Riders in shorts or open shoes are asked to change; sand and hot exhaust pipes do not forgive bare skin.

Handling briefing

Your guide covers throttle and brake, body position on a slope, how to turn on soft sand and what to do if the quad digs in. Automatics need no clutch or gear changes.

Practice lap

A short lap on flat sand so you feel the machine before the terrain changes. This is where nervous first-timers stop being nervous.

Ride the designated area

You ride the marked Al Badayer riding area with a guide watching, at the pace of the slowest rider in the group. Not open-desert free riding.

Finish and refresh

Back to camp, gear returned, water in hand. Most guests then head into a sandboarding session or the evening safari.

Quad Bike Dubai Age Limit and Licence Rules

Riders must be 16 or older to drive a quad themselves. Below that age, children ride as passengers on a twin-seat machine with an adult driving.

  • Passengers from around 4 years old are accepted on a twin-seat quad, provided the child reaches the footrests and can hold the grab rail unaided.
  • No licence is required for a self-drive quad in our designated Al Badayer riding area. Bring photo identification so we can confirm the rider's age.
  • The Yamaha Raptor 700cc is for experienced riders only. It is a manual sport quad with real power; we will move you to a 620cc automatic if the practice lap says so.
  • Pregnant guests should not ride. Nor should guests with back, neck or heart conditions, or anyone who has had recent surgery.
  • No alcohol or drugs on the day — refused with no refund, every time.

What Should You Wear for Quad Biking in Dubai?

Long sleeves and long trousers

Light and breathable, but covering your arms and legs. Sand thrown up by the machine in front stings bare skin, and exhaust pipes are hot at a standstill.

Closed-toe shoes with a solid sole

Trainers or boots. No sandals, no flip-flops, no open backs. Your feet work the pegs and the brake, and sand gets everywhere in open shoes.

Sunglasses and a hat for off the machine

Goggles cover you while riding; you will want sunglasses and a hat for the ridge stop and around the camp.

Clothes you do not mind ruining

Fine desert sand works into every seam. Nothing white, nothing you were planning to wear to dinner afterwards.

Sunscreen, applied before you arrive

Reapplying with sandy hands does not work. Put it on at the hotel.

A light jacket from November to February

Once the sun drops at Al Badayer the temperature falls quickly, especially on a night ride.

Wear the gear for the whole session

Helmet, goggles and gloves stay on from the moment you mount until you are back at camp, including the photo stop if the engine is running.

Follow the guide's line

Sand changes daily with wind and traffic. A face that held yesterday can be collapsed today. Your guide rides it every day; take the line you are shown.

Keep your spacing

Stay the distance your guide sets from the machine in front. Most rental incidents in the desert are rear-end contacts on a descent, not spectacular crashes.

No stunts, no jumps, no racing

These are guided adventure rentals on a shared route. Deliberate stunt riding ends the session and makes the rider liable for damage.

Never ride under the influence

Alcohol or drugs on the day mean no machine, no refund, and no discussion.

Speak up early

If you feel out of your depth, say so at the practice loop rather than halfway up a dune. We will move you to an easier machine or an easier route.

Where Quad Biking in Dubai Takes Place

All our quad riding happens at the Al Badayer Desert Camp, XP57+V87, Al Badayer, Sharjah, UAE, beside Big Red in Sharjah. From Dubai it is about forty minutes on the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44), sometimes signposted as the Madam Road, and roughly 57km from Dubai International Airport.

This is the only desert we operate in. Not Lahbab, not Al Qudra, not Margham. Riding takes place in marked areas with a guide watching rather than free-range across the dune field, which keeps beginners out of trouble and keeps the machines out of the soft bowls. Our booking office is at Barsha Heights, Dubai, United Arab Emirates — paperwork only; nothing departs from there.

Drive yourself and park at the camp, or take a transfer package. We collect from Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, JBR and other Dubai locations.
